Arusha Declaration on Sustainable Development

Representatives from more than 40 African countries gathered at a United Nations-backed conference in Arusha, Tanzania, to discuss the region’s strategy to achieve sustainable development and come up with an integrated strategy for the region to encourage environmental initiatives. The meeting led to the Arusha Declaration on Africa's Post Rio+20 Strategy for Sustainable Development, calling on Africa to capitalize on the opportunities presented by Rio+20. To that end, the conference announced a number of new initiatives on the green economy, ecosystems, land management and biodiversity. Delegates also agreed to form a common position to ensure Africa’s participation in the climate talks to take place in Doha, Qatar, in December. AMCEN was supported by the UN Delivering as One in Tanzania.
